Hi everyone,
I was driving home the other day thinking about how it had been a while since anything had gone wrong with my 900 (at least 5 weeks), when I received a text message and pulled over to check it. When I looked up, my temperature gauge was reading very high and I found coolant running quite quickly from somewhere at the back of the engine. I couldn't see where it was coming form t the time, but managed to get home with a water top up.
When I checked more closely it seemed to be coming from somewhere around the water pump, and would run out quite quickly if I put my mouth over the opening of the coolant reservoir and blew air in to pressurise it. When I took the pulley off it didn't look as though it was running from between the shaft and pump casting, but was definitely dripping from the bottom of the pump.
I am thinking that it was coming from either between the gasket and engine/pump, or from a failed pump seal. When I pooled some water over the small hole in the bottom area of the pump casting that I think might be meant to act as a tell-tale for seal failure, bubbles slowly rose up out of it. I think that maybe the coolant was running out of this hole and the seal is worn out. The funny thing is that the pump looks to me to be in great condition (see pics), although I understand this doesn't mean the seal isn't worn out.
Does anyone think that it sounds like the seal is dead? And is this replaceable or do I have to buy a whole new pump? It looks likethe impeller is a press fit onto the shaft so I was wondering if I could just knock it off and replace the seal
