Hello,
New member here, but I have lurked on and off for a couple years. Used the forum to research my 9-5 wagon before purchase and also have referenced some great write-ups for a couple of repairs.
I've been leaking coolant for a couple months. Started out with a small puddle under right front consistent with water pump, but as there were no other symptoms (noise, overheating, etc.) I wasn't too concerned. Recently leak became worse and I couldn't put off the repair any longer.
Dug into the repair today and removal wasn't too terribly tough thanks to some good info on this site. Found that overall things looked good and it was only leaking from the housing where the solid/metal pipe (longitudinal coolant line) enters. Upon removal of the water pump everything looks solid, no play in bearings and no visible wear. Pic below.
I have two questions. 1. Should I still replace the entire water pump? My inclination is yes since it isn't terrible expensive and as long as I have it all taken apart...2. Where it was leaking from the housing, it just doesn't seem as though the metal pipe makes a very solid connection. The bracket above that primary holds the upper metal pipe does overlap, but really doesn't seem like much of a positive connection. The metal line also secures to the right of the headers, but again just doesn't seem that secure. Assuming I use a fresh o-ring, is this really enough to prevent any leaks once pressurized?
Thanks in advance,
DK
P.S. When reassembling, should I use sealant in addition to the gasket at pump to housing connection?
