Odd fuel gauge, fuel smell?

A few days ago I thought I could smell fuel while I was driving, past an old car and couldnt smell it anymore so I thought it was that.

Today we fueled up and hit the highway. I started the car and as usual the fuel gauge went to full. As I driving along the highway I looked at my cluster and the guage showed dead empty and the light was on.. oh ****.
Pullled onto the side of the highway, turned her off. Nothing dripping under car, fuel cap on and tight, nothing out of place under the hood.

Jumped back in and turned her on, fuel guage was reading normal, so off we went, but a few minutes later its empty and the light is on.

Later that day after driving about 150km we headed home. For a few seconds I thought I smelt fuel at one stage but that was it, and the fuel guage didnt act up once...

Any clues guys? I'd image its a faulty fuel level sensor in the tank, which I really dont want it to be..
