I am looking seriously at a 1991 9000 turbo that will not shift into 5th. It feels as though the linkage is not lined up correctly. The car shift into 1-4 just fine, not completely perfectly but it does have 200k on it. When attempting to shift into 5th all that I get is a grinding feel and noise. My thoughts were either the Syncro is bad, which seems weird because 5th is the least used gear or the linkage is just misaligned.
The shift lever it self is turned to the right so that the picture looks more like this:
1 3 5

2 4 R
I attempted to just turn it back to the left but it was fastened tight.
What could it be and what will it require on my part?
The guy will take a grand for it. Is it worth that? I am worried that I will end up having to replace a transmission.
