Wide left turn radius and knocking noise

So my buddy just bought a 1999 9-3. It had a spare on one of the rims, the other rim was given to him with a blown out tire on it. He did not notice on the test drive, but when he takes a hard left turn there is a very loud knocking noise (metal on metal sound) coming from one of the front wheels, its hard to tell. When taking a u turn to the right it is fine, nice sharp turn radius. When turning to the left he can only make a wide turn, not nearly as sharp. He says he can feel the wheel stopping too early as if it is hitting something and not being able to turn it anymore. I jacked it up and had him turn back and fourth and noticed the right wheel is not turning nearly in (to the left) as much as the left wheel turns in (to the right). The wheel is not physically hitting anything though.

I originally thought maybe a bad CV axle, but I really have no idea. When it was in the air I did not hear any of that knocking noise, which leads me to think it is happening while the CV axle is spinning. But could a bad CV limit how much a wheel turns? Any input on this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
