Hi,
I'm going to take a look at a 2001 9-3 this weekend. It drives fine, but apparently has a noisy power steering pump that needs be replaced (verified by a mechanic, says the owner).
My problem is that I can't get it towed easily because it's a 2h ferry ride away. Do you guys think it is safe to drive it for about ~10km with a potentially broken pump? My hope is to get it on the ferry and get a tow home from the other side.
As far as I know the power steering fluid is not leaking and the pump is just noisy. As far as I know the PS fluid also lubricates the steering, right? I guess the pulley could also seize.
His mechanic told him to not drive it, as a broken pump could seize the steering completely?
Obviously I don't want to take any risks.. but i've driven cars with broken power steering before and it was doable.
Thanks for any advice.
