Despite there being nothing wrong with using a USB adapter in the original DC plug in the center console, I decided to swap my DC plug with a USB charger ().
Wiring was a breeze since this adapter handled the 12v to 5v conversion. For the ground, I attached the wire off the back of the plug to the bolt that's right under the coin holder. Then positive was even simpler as I was able to just plug the positive connector on the original DC plug to the new one -- no wiring needed.

The plug required no trimming to fit in the original location. The hardest part was scraping up my hand trying to get at the release tab on the passenger side of the original plug. I had to take the side panel off the console but that takes all but 20 seconds. It was still annoying trying to remove it but I ended up doing it without breaking anything.
